Stephen Morris is the J. Tuzo Wilson Professor of Geophysics at the University of Toronto. We asked him everything from what he is reading to what advice he would give to young researchers in hopes of giving you a better understanding of what goes on outside the lab for one of the best minds in Canadian research.
What do you like most about being a scientist?
The freedom to pursue oddball things, without regard to popular opinion or application.
What advice would you give young researchers?
Don’t plan your life or career. Just plunge into whatever seems most interesting.
What are you reading right now?
“The Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter” by David Sax.
What do you like to do for fun?
Build fires.
If you could do any profession other than your own what would it be?
Machinist.
Aside from things for your survival, what item would you most want to have with you on a deserted island?
A subscription to “The Economist”.
